Finding Ways - Access Views That Matter To You

Share your experience visiting accessible places with others

I stated on the Welcome page that I believe the power is with the people to make the World more accessible.

When I travel somewhere, my personal needs are to go in transport where I can ideally remain in my wheelchair.  If I travel by car, I need to park relatively close to the entrance in a parking space where there is plenty of room to get in and out of my car and to easily get my wheelchair in and out of the car.

I then need level or ramped access to the premises with suitably wide enough doors, lifts and aisles for my manual wheelchair, which is 100cm long and 75cm wide from rim to rim.

When being served, it is preferable to have a low level counter, although if I'm asked to sign something, such as when checking in at a hotel, providing a book or a clipboard to rest on is sufficient.

Where appropriate, I need toilet facilities which I can use while remaining in my wheelchair.  However, because I can walk a little, I can manage if I can get near the door and there are no steps, but it is a great help if grab rails are provided in the toilet.

The point I’m making is that I have my own personal needs.  And so does everyone else.  Whether you are a wheelchair user similar to me, or use a powerchair and struggle to transfer, your needs are similar but different and personal to you.

At the same time, people with visual, hearing and learning disabilities all have differing individual needs, so it's not just about wheelchair access.

FindingWays.com is a global web-based accessibility information database in which any business who serves the public can describe what facilities they have and how accessible they are.

But more importantly, FindingWays.com is the only global website of it’s kind which enables disabled people to submit reviews describing their accessibility experiences when visiting various venues throughout the World.  This allows others to search information provided by both the businesses themselves and customers who have been there, helping them to identify if someone with a similar disability has experience at that venue.  You can even submit video/photographs via You Tube and link them to your review, making it even more useful to others.

This approach builds on the well established and very effective concept of recommendation and referral, which is always the best way to find out where to go.
