My condition, Spina Bifida, means that I have no feeling in my feet and I couldn't walk
on hot embers anyway. But I can do it on my hands!
Firewalking is a classic metaphor for showing someone that if you can overcome the fear
of doing something that appears both impossible and dangerous, then you can overcome any fear.
Prior to attending Tony Robbins' Unleash the Power Within event at
the Excel Arena in London in June 2007, I knew firewalking on hot coals was part of the event. I was determined
to do this in order to fully participate in the event and learnt that for disabled people like me, it was possible to do the
"walk" on my hands wheelbarrow-style, with two people holding my legs.
It was a huge success, but alas there was no photographic evidence of my achievement.
I was determined to repeat the feat and the opportunity came up in December 2007.
Aurora Foundation, a charity supporting disadvantaged children in County Durham, held a fundraising event on
Newcastle Quayside. On a cold, wet Sunday evening, the fire was lit and an hour later, with the fire blazing, the ashes
were raked out. At a temperature in excess of 1200 degrees fahrenheit, 4 times the temperature at which skin burns, 30 people,
including yours truly, traversed the 20 foot path of glowing embers.
